Joyce
McDonald receives AQHA Award
Joyce McDonald Earns 2007 Merle Wood Humanitarian Award
Joyce McDonald of Great Falls,
Montana has been named the 2007 Merle Wood Humanitarian Award
recipient and will be honored at the 2009 AQHA Convention in San
Francisco, California on March 2.
The presentation will take place during the Hall of Fame
Banquet hosted by the American Quarter Horse Foundation.
Joyce will be presented with a commemorative bronze for her
humanitarian works.
Joyce’s
commitment to the American Quarter Horse and her ability to share
this devotion with others has made a profound impact on the members
of Montana. For more
than 30 years, she has given her time and wisdom to foster positive
relationships with countless youth, instilling in them a passion for
the horse and the ability or knowledge to succeed. “Joyce became
one of my life’s great mentors,” said Kelly Lake, friend and
former youth competitor.
Joyce’s
convictions of hard work and kindness make it easy for others to
count on her. That
is what humanitarians are - compassionate and giving. “She is the
heart of MQHA,” said AQHA National Director Marilyn Randall.
“Without Joyce’s continuous support and dedication, the
Montana Quarter Horse Association would not be alive.”
Her immeasurable hours of voluntary work spent to improve the
experiences of others led to her involvement with Healing Hearts
Through Horses, a relatively new program created to enrich the lives
of abused children who are victims of abandonment, neglect, family
violence or parental drug and alcohol abuse.
She is also one of the founding members of the Equine
Protection League of Cascade County which is a program organized to
assist law enforcement as needed with cases of abused or neglected
horses. Joyce has also
been on the board of directors and extremely active in the Tri-Angle
Quarter Horse Association since it’s formation in the mid-70's.
Through the years, she has served as a MQHA board member, the
Amateur Chairperson, Youth Advisor and Secretary-Treasurer and also
has been a columnist for a number of horse publications.
Joyce was presented with the MQHA Heritage Award in 2004 and
the MQHA Spirit of Giving Award in 2006.
Overall, Joyce’s positive and enduring spirit has
distinguished her among her peers.
The strength she exhibits allows her remarkable voluntary
service to persevere and stand as an example for younger
generations.
